Event > Oldschool Drag Day 2014 (Part 1)
Oldschool.co.nz is a New Zealand-based online forum and community that caters to enthusiasts of older cars of all kinds. The club puts on a number of events each year in both the North and South Island, including an annual drag day at Meremere Dragway. Since I don't have a running vehicle that can be classed as 'old school', I caught a ride with a mate in his AP5 Valiant, which not only took part in the event...
...but towed Joel Paterson's AE86 Trueno drift car to the strip too.
With a turnout of just over 60 cars, there was plenty of variety at the event, but everyone managed to get lots of runs in too.
A couple of modern cars were allowed to run for the day to boost numbers over the 60 mark. This GT500 Mustang may not be old, but at least it had a retro feel to its styling.
Competitors weren't limited to just 4 wheels either, as this 2-smoke scooter and Yamaha RZ 350R demonstrate.
One of my favourite cars of the day was this 2-door Mk 1 Escort that slid its way down most of the track...
...thanks to its tunnel rammed V8 up front.
Proof that you don't need to go fast to have fun!
Greg from Midnight Upholstery provided a sausage sizzle, drinks and a few baked goodies for lunch using another club member's Morris Minor that has been converted into a towable BBQ.
Look closely and you can see a shiny puddle of oil from one of the few breakages of the day.
Super straight 4-cylinder Mazda 808 warming up a single tyre before one of its many runs of the day.
This has got to be the nicest 240Z that I've ever seen in the flesh. It sounded lovely with its Nissan VQ35 engine conversion too.
Check back soon to see Part 2 of our coverage from the 2014 Oldschool Drag Day, which will consist of more photos and the best times of the day from a bunch of competitors. If you're interested in old cars of all kinds and want to chat to like-minded guys and girls in a relaxed atmosphere, head on over to the Oldschool forum.
