Car Build > Pro7 Mazda RX-7 - What’s Been Happening?

Tags: car builds, mazda, rx7, mazda pro7 racing, pro7 mazda rx7, circuit racing, brent shaw

It's been a long time since I've created a blog post about my Mazda RX-7 Pro7 race car - so long in fact, that the last update was way back in October 2012. So before I get into what's happening with the car at this very moment, I thought I'd create a short summary of my experiences with the RX-7 from the past 18 months...

MIT Motorsport lecturer Alan Clarke emailed a few progress photos recently showing the reassembly of my MIT/KiwiMotoring Honda Civic. The students have been working hard to put the car back together, and it's really exciting to see how it's coming along so quickly now as they approach the end of Certificate in Motorsport (Level 2) course...

Car Build > Pro7 Mazda RX-7 - Painting the Interior

I'd been thinking long and hard about how I was going to approach the next phase of my Pro7 RX-7 build - painting the interior. It's a task that can be done by your average DIYer with a reasonable amount of skill, research, and of course - the right materials. Painting the interior myself sounded like a good way of keeping my build cost down, but the more I looked into it, the more I felt like it was a job best left to the experts...

Car Build > Pro7 Mazda RX-7 - Making Progress

The photo above was taken around 6 weeks ago, when I starting to stress out about my Pro7 race car project. I was beginning to wonder if I was heading in the right direction, and I was having doubts as to whether I had the skills to build something like this by myself. It felt like the progress I was making was diminishing with every step, and between running an existing business while creating a new venture with KiwiMotoring - it certainly felt like I had bitten off more than I could chew. I needed to talk to someone locally who had experience with building race cars - and Pro7s in particular - so I got in touch with Noel Rush...

Car Build > Pro7 Mazda RX-7 – Seat Mounts

Tags: car builds, mazda, rx7, pro7 mazda rx7, mazda pro7 racing, craig howser panel & performance, brent shaw

The floorpan of the RX-7 is known for being difficult to work with when mounting aftermarket seats. It doesn't help that it is a fairly compact sports car with a small cockpit - but it's also due to the design of the transmission tunnel, which is a bit of an unusual shape to allow room for the exhaust that exits the drivers side of the engine...

While the roll cage was being welded in a few months ago, I started the exciting part of buying and collecting car parts for the race car. Starting off with this not so essential (but cool anyway) engine start button. I've had this sitting on my desk for a while now, and I can't wait to finally press the button and hear the engine roar (purr?) into life!

Car Build > Pro7 Mazda RX-7 – The Roll Cage Installation

Following on from my previous post about the RX-7's roll cage - I arrived home from my 2 week trip to Japan, excited to hear about the progress of the roll cage installation from Palmerston North Automotive. Unfortunately there were no messages waiting for me when I got back, and I was about to discover that the relatively simple task of welding in the roll cage (with most parts already supplied ready to be fitted) was going to be a frustrating and drawn out affair...
